Tug Hill Tradition

Our vineyards are hand-maintained by trained members of our team – not machines. We believe in authentic wine making, limiting production to the varieties that grow in our northern climate.

In 2018, Tug Hill Spirits launched, under the direction of Derek Card, Head Winemaker and Distiller. Keeping true to our vision, our premium spirits, are blended with locally sourced, all-natural ingredients.

Our History

The Tug Hill Estate, home to the Tug Hill Vineyards, Spirits, and Orchards Brands, is an agriculturally based, family-friendly business. We offer high quality, local products, and services in an inviting and positive atmosphere. It is the northernmost Estate Winery and Distillery in New York; a unique terroir, dramatic change of seasons, manicured gardens, and placement overlooking the Black River Valley makes it one of the most picturesque locations.

Tug Hill Vineyards is owned by Jonathan and Taren Beller, who took over starting January 2021 after the retirement of the original owners, Michael and Susan Maring. The Bellers are dedicated to the continuity and growth of a local, community-based agricultural business. And have a greater interest in creating more robust, community-centered events and activities in our gorgeous location.

In 2007 Michael and Susan Maring established Tug Hill Vineyards, breaking ground, and planted over 10 acres of specialty French-American cold-hardy hybrid grapes, alongside 3 acres of raspberries and 5 acres of blueberries. Dale Crossman-Cole, Susan’s sister, served as the first winemaker for several years after a career teaching sciences and physics at Lowville Academy. Her husband, Dick Cole, developed the original marketing strategy. The result of Maring’s family work is a dynamic property that now boasts a distillery and busting event center in addition to an established winery.

In 2018, Derek Card, the Winemaker, launched Tug Hill Spirits alongside our established winery brand, Tug Hill Vineyards. While a growing brand, our distillery encompasses high-quality, natural, and regionally inspired brandy, vodka, and rum.

The Tug Hill Estate team is dedicated to producing high-quality craft beverages, as well as high-quality, but laid back, dining and relaxation experiences. The desire to augment the region’s agricultural and culinary landscape drives both our product and event offerings.

We look forward to your visit and the chance to serve you.
